ILA president Carole Medal officially opened the 2009 conference. Perpetual Internet pioneer Omar Wasow delivered a dynamic presentation peppered with phrases such as “libraries are public parks for the brain,” “libraries are vital space in the heart of the community” and that “libraries need to inform and transform.” He reminded all that Carnegie libraries incorporated steps into their design so that people understood that they were ascending to be transformed by the library experience. Laughter filled the room when Wasow led the audience in a test of digital experiences, even including asking those who had been dumped by email to remain standing. An hour before his presentation, he posted “what do you love about libraries” and “what bugs you about libraries” on his facebook and twitter accounts and the instant responses were compelling, one stating that “libraries are partners in curiosity.”
